History of Slot Machine Games

Before you start playing your favorite slot games, discover the history of this game. Slot machines appeared in the USA in the second half of 19th century and since then, became more and more sophisticated.
  • In 1887 Charles August Fey, machinist and gamer, provided the world with 'New Nickel Operated Machine'. This first slot machine was called Liberty Bell and had symbols of Bells, horseshoes, diamonds, spades, and hearts on its reels.
  • In 1901 Fey also created the first draw poker machine
  • In 1902 slot machine games were made illegal in San Francisco and the ban soon applied to the whole of California and Nevada. This didn’t stop the inventor from continuing to manufacture his slot machines.
  • In 1907 'Iron Case' surfaced. Herbert Stephen Mills, a Chicago manufacturer of arcade-type machines, began producing a slot machine with a similar payout to Fey's.
  • In 1915, wood cabinets replaced the far too heavy cast iron slot machines.
  • By the time 1919 rolled around, you could find a slot machine anywhere in the country.
  • In 1929 the first silver dollar slot machine was created.
  • in the 1930’s other improvements to slot machines were made by Mills Company: noise reduction (“Silent Bells”), double jackpots and themed designs: Lion Head, War eagle, Roman Head and Castle Front.
  • In the 1940’s Bugsy Siegel added slot machines to his Flamingo Hilton hotel in Las Vegas.
Slot machines continued to evolve after that with the birth of 4 reel slots in the 1950’s, hold and draw slots in the 1960’s and video slot machine games in the 1970’s. In the past decades, microprocessor-controlled slots with up to five spinning reels holding hundreds of symbols have appeared.

Slot machine games have also grown increasingly more complicated to satisfy a more sophisticated public. Machines can now have many different reels and many different symbols. A reel can contain as many as 20 symbols.

Today, with the emergence of the Internet, hundreds of online slot machine casinos (also known as simulation slot machines or sim slots) have appeared, which gives players opportunity to play slot machine games on-line.
